Since I started blogging, the one constant hurdle with it has been keeping the blog updated. I love to write, but it was more fun when it was just a hobby, without a commitment attached to it. Unlike my lack of commitment to writing on the blog, I haven’t been skipping reading and I am inspired by bloggers who keep at it like Stephanie O’Connel, Suoma Tobias and many others. It seems like they have figured out how to knock-out procrastination; which I struggle with. I wanted to find some answers on what it takes for one to master and become great at what they do.
Practice. Practice..
I love Jussie Smollett in Empire. Every time I watch him sing I’m always amazed and covered in goose bumps. He does it so well you’d think he was born singing. I also imagine the hours of practice that comes with that level of mastery. It has been estimated that you need about 10,000 hours of practice to master something. Only thinking about doing something and talking about it will not make you good at it. So get your hands in the dirt and just start.
Focus. Do it now.
Do you have a habit of starting projects but somehow never get to finishing them? Or do you constantly hold off today’s work for tomorrow until tomorrow becomes someday? If you are like me – a procrastinator, remember this: You cannot get back time. If you accounted for the cost of lost opportunity every time you swap doing what you must do with what’s easy, you would throw tomorrow out of your vocabulary.
I have a good old post I wrote on procrastination (here). Yeah, I know that it’s ironic. But although I am now generally on track after writing that post, I am struggling again with procrastination. And I’m picking myself up again. You see, that’s the thing about teaching old dogs new tricks. – You have to keep reminding them. So it doesn’t matter how many times you do it. Clean the dust off and use grace to get back up and keep it moving.
